The competency-based educational paradigm, being the basis for the implementation of the current Federal State Educational Standards of Higher Education, involves focusing on the formation of a competent specialist capable of quickly navigating the changing socio-economic and production spaces, effectively using a large flow of information. The designated competencies are successfully formed in students through involvement in the research work. This circumstance has updated the work on the implementation of the research, the problem of which is to study the research activities of students as a basic component of future professional activity.

The goal of the research is to theoretically substantiate and experimentally confirm the importance of students’ research activities in the professional training of a university.

The object and methods of the research are presented by the analysis of scientific literature, comparison, ranking, generalization, online questionnaires, and visual presentation of the results. The experimental work was carried out on the basis of the Faculty of Economics and Management of Maikop State Technological University.

The Results and discussions: the concept of «students’ research activities» has been disclosed; the functional components of the research work of university students have been defined; the results of an empirical study aimed at identifying the significance of research work in the educational process of the university have been presented.

Key findings: students’ research work is a process of cognitive activity to obtain new knowledge, solve theoretical and practical problems, self-education and self-realization of research abilities; the functional components of the research work of university students include educational, organizational, analytical, motivational, developmental and educational ones; the research activity of students is assigned the role of a significant tool for professional communication, a facilitator of motivation to master a future profession.
